Join Us in Genoa, Italy for the Women’s Vacation Rentals European Conference!
Discover, Connect, & Empower:
When I first ventured into the vacation rental industry, I never imagined the hurdles I would face as a woman. On one hand, there was my passion for hospitality—creating memorable experiences for guests and owners. On the other, there were persistent challenges: stereotypes, biases, and the constant struggle to be recognized equally in a male-dominated field.
Just as an example, part of my training included learning how to use a digital camera. Even though I’ve always been passionate about photography, the trainer still felt the need to explain how to insert the batteries, including which way the plus and minus signs go.
Attending women’s conferences and circles has always been a turning point for me. They are more than just professional events—they’re safe spaces to connect, share, and grow alongside women who truly understand our struggles and aspirations. It’s a reminder that we don’t have to face these challenges alone.
Women in our industry often encounter issues like:
- Gender stereotypes: Even today, some perceive our roles as less significant or less serious. This can make us feel overlooked or undervalued, even when we pour passion and effort into everything we do.
- Lack of representation: Women remain underrepresented in leadership and decision-making roles. This limits our visibility, our recognition, and our ability to shape the future of the industry.
- Balancing work and personal life: Running a vacation rental—or any business—can be demanding. Juggling work commitments and family life can be overwhelming, especially when support systems are limited or nonexistent.
- Limited access to networks and resources: Building a supportive community and finding mentorship can be difficult. Yet these connections are often the very things that empower us to move forward and innovate.
Statistics Highlighting Women’s Role in the Vacation Rental Industry
As a woman in the industry of Vacation Rentals, and despite the challenges, women are making significant strides in the vacation rental industry. Here are some key statistics:
- Leadership Representation: According to a Rent Responsibly analysis, about 11.1% of vacation rental companies have female CEOs, and 10.7% have female founders. This is slightly higher than the general statistic for Fortune 500 companies, where women run 10.4% of these companies.
- Guest Demographics: In 2023, women accounted for 45% of vacation rental guests, while men made up 55%. This indicates a substantial female presence among consumers in the industry.
- Market Growth: The global vacation rental market size was estimated at USD 89.32 billion in 2023 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 3.7% from 2024 to 2030. This growth presents opportunities for women to further establish themselves in various roles within the industry.
