12 Sustainable tips for a life on the road – Part 2

The ‘Ultimate’ guide for living & Travel ethically & responsibly as a nomad

[ Part 2 ]

In Part One of The Ultimate Guide for living and travelling ethically and responsibly we talked about, Carbon Footprints what it is and how to measure it. We talked about Sustainability Development Goals for the UN and how to practically apply them to travelling and with a little warning about investing carbon neutral with some Airlines taking advantage of the last-minute grab for cash. So now let’s look at some more ways you can contribute in micro ways to help the planet in the everyday choices that we make while we travel.  And then, we will show you a bit about how Nomad Stays contributes.

If you are interested in the Sustainable Development Goals and how you can contribute check the UN SDG; and you might be surprised how many you are already contributing to. As we mentioned in the part one, these goals are designed to be a “blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all”.

Here is how Nomad Stays is partaking and how you can too. As Ban Ki-moon, Former Secretary-General of the United Nations put it simply very clearly.

Sustainablity Develepment is the pathway to the future we want for all. It offers a framework to generate ecconomic growth, achieve social justice, exercise environmental stewardship and strengthen governance

If you are curious to know what was the impact of carbon reduction throughout Covid 19 See ScienceDirect.com for full reports.

Currently, we hear and talk a lot about sustainable, ethical, and responsible travelling. But what are we doing about it in every choice we make.

The situation created by the Corona-19 virus could give the best premise to finally start travelling in a more conscious way and towards a happier planet and a better being mindful of how we affect the world around us.

Dan Shechtman is the Philip Tobias Professor of Materials Science at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, an Associate of the US Department of Energy’s Ames Laboratory, and Professor of Materials Science at Iowa State University. He states it nicely.

Sustainable development requires human ingenuity. People are the most important resource.

The curious travellers

As full-time traveller, we are curious creatures thinking out of the box. Not driven by ownership but by sharing experiences and learning, by seeing the world as our home and envisaging to touch all the parts of it we can from 30 thousand feet to under the ocean. It all about a curious mindset. leaning into change and seeing what’s possible, innovating and finding new ways.

With that being said it is always good to get yourself some coverage and not to always throw caution to the wind. Cover yourself in case something goes wrong with travel insurance.

How do you practically apply all of these ‘sustainable principles’ into reality?

Here the first few points which could help you, the planet, and have a positive impact on local communities, from now on while your travelling think of how you can make small effects toward being more responsible traveller;

7. Less is more!

One mistake we made early on was to travel too fast. Take the time to Travel slowly. Less is more. Pack as little as possible and don’t carry clothes or items you will replace and how out, but good quality clothing that lasts and you can use for a number of things. Invest in good quality, sustainable, lasting products. Remember it’s all about the people and the experience not collecting stuff.

8. Cut Plastics and disposables

As much as you can be mindful to use reuseable equipment, water bottle, mugs utensils and shopping bags. Litter as little as you can, ‘aim to leave a place better than you found it. Be mindful not to leave these reusable items behind while exploring.

9. Use Technology wisely

Instead of printing out tickets, guides etc opt for USB chargeable items. Remember less is more! It is getting harder and harder to travel with less when you need all the gear for just your office but, every time you move make sure you get rid of anything that you are not using.
